This was a mini-vertical of Ladera Sagrada’s Papa Godello wines (made from Spain’s indigenous white wine grape). These are all made from 100% unoaked Godello grown in an organic vineyard planted between 1970 and 1997 in the Galicia region. They had their malolactic fermentation completely blocked, and the results are crisp, light to medium-bodied whites with plenty of pear and caramelized citrus notes intermixed with a hint of flowers in the 2011 and 2013. Those two vintages are the best of the four I tasted, and represent reasonably good value.

More Info

Founded in 1920, Ladera Sagrada is located in northwestern Spain in Valdeorras. At 62 acres, Ladera Sagrada is the largest estate in the region, with vineyards planted at 1,749 feet to slate and granite topsoils over thin clay. 90% of the Godello and Mencia vines are 25+ years old, of which a portion of Godello vines are 40+ years old and the oldest in Valdeorras. The high altitude and the cool temperatures provide a long ripening period, resulting in a highly aromatic, fresh expression with strong mineral undertones. Jose Sotos is the principal owner and winemaker who is assisted by Albino Fernandez, vineyard manager and assistant winemaker.
